Stuck in an Emo Band (behind the scenes) is a behind the scenes video created by Rebecca Parham.
Synopsis[]
Rebecca Parham indicates everything done behind the scenes of Stuck in an Emo Band.
Process[]
On the first day, she was just listening to the song and mentally visualize what would the visual version of the song would be like. In addition, DaneBoe made a few visuals for her like butt crocheting and pterodactyls, so that Rebecca can take advantage of these visual cues. Later, Rebecca started to draw some thumbnails/story boards for the animation. Meanwhile, she was thinking of the emo singer's character design, in which she experimented to make him look like DaneBoe, but in an edgier and darker look.
Next, the animation came in five basic stages:
- Layout: Layout is where one roughs in the entire film and figure out that one made many mistakes in the thumbnails, but once they fix those mistakes, they move on to actual animation.
- Animation: Animation is where one make funny faces in the mirror, shoot some embarrassing reference video and take a lot of pictures of their hands. A professional animator may do the actions themselves to see exactly how they want this character to move. Rebecca was comically jumping around the office a lot trying to figure out how some of this stuff worked.
- Ink and paint: After the animation process, one moves on to ink and paint. Since Rebecca's animation with black outline painted in some black color and accidentally actually scribbling and not drawing during the animation stage, she thought that she'd figure out the details and ink and paint.
- Finalization: She goes back to the beginning of the entire film and shade all of the color, in which all is done in Flash, though she was making the backgrounds on Photoshop. Sometimes, the perspective in the background was a little too difficult for her to figure out on her own, though she had a 3D model of a stage on hand. It was the main set she used for my senior thesis film, Bottled Opera. Any time she couldn't figure out a perspective, I would just open up that model in Maya and use the reference.
- Editing: After all the process, she moves on to editing. She put all the shots in Adobe Premiere and spliced them all together. She find more mistakes, she adds more effects export and she's done.
