Rebecca Explains 1 is a video from the Rebecca Explains series created by Rebecca Parham.
Synopsis[]
Rebecca explains to someone their comment about her personal experience and answers a few questions.
Comments and Explanations[]
Comment: There is a girl who wants to be an animator, but people have been telling her that it is a waste of time. Her single mother is making minimal wage, so that means she can't afford to go to any art school. She went to CU Denver and thought of studying animation there, though people say that it is her talent and creativity that matter, and not her degree. She is wondering if that is true. People were saying that it's not worth it, and she should go nursing or teaching, instead. She is wondering if it is possible to be a good animator without going to an art school.

"I can't afford my dream school!" |
EXPLANATION: Not everybody can afford their dream school, and for Rebecca, she thinks it's worse. Animation requires a lot of work, from buying software to setting up hardware, which means all the essentials needed for animation are expensive together. Rebecca went into Ringling, which is one of the most expensive animation schools. Everyone was in debt in that school. She has even seen people who did nothing but loans for a few full years. They were even in debt for $100,000. Rebecca was lucky that she didn't pay this much, because her parents have foot the bill. SUMMARY: In summary, it means that going to animation school is pricey, both for the debts and the guest speakers, staff, software and hardware. |
"Does which school you go to matter?" |
EXPLANATION: People say that the school one goes to doesn't matter, it's what they can do. While that may be true, not all animation programs are created the same. Some schools have all the money, others have all the software, some even have staff members that worked in big animation companies like Pixar and DreamWorks, some have a higher standard of what an A+ is more than others. For example, before going to Ringling, she went to her older university with an animation program there, but the thing is, they have shown a lower quality animation on their website as what they consider an A+ material, while big animation schools have higher quality animation as what they consider an A+ material. SUMMARY: There has been so much controversy about whether the school matter or one's talent matters. If one has a really solid portfolio, recruiters aren't going to care about what school they went to. If one has talent and didn't need art school, they can get the job. An art school can also help, but it is sometimes not needed for all animators. |
"Stop dreaming. Get a real job." |
EXPLANATION: Rebecca says that dreamers can make history. The ones who step out of their comfort zone and everybody is telling them about it are the ones who are going to accomplish, and it could be anybody. People were told to get a real stable job like what most people do, though risk-taking is not for everybody. Just because one steps out of their comfort zone doesn't mean they should do it. One can fail all the time at something they hate, even if one works fine on a company for many years, they can still get fired, meaning that they failed at something that was safe and what they hated. That means that they wasted a lot of time on something they hated. One can also fail at something they like just because they enjoy themselves and had fun. SUMMARY: Anybody can fail at anything they like or hate. |
"Small, competitive, male dominated industry." |
EXPLANATION: Rebecca says that the industry isn't generally small, but it's getting smaller, gradually. At the time Rebecca uploaded the video, the kids are going through a weird place in animation. If there is a small tier of people in the school, they can go because there could be a spot for them. One of Rebecca's friends left for a medical animation studio. It is also a little competitive, because one is trying to get that job over someone else, but at the same time, animation is very collaborative. It's in fact one of the most collaborative arts ever. One can't hold grudges nor be mean to each other in animation. A lot of work was given in the animation industry, too, and Rebecca was offered with a lot of freelance jobs. About women, Pixar had a boys club, so it was mostly about boys. A female director got fired while in the middle of directing Brave. Though, this is all changing. A teacher had his class with 80% men, and the other class had 50% men and 50% women. In Rebecca's class, 60% of them were women. Women are entering the industry more than men, recently. SUMMARY: The animation industry is getting smaller. One can be competitive, but no need to be cutthroat. Also, women are becoming more and more common in the animation industry. |
